Antioch Democratic Club Identifies Need for Full Community College as Top Priority
While is it well-known around East Contra Costa County communities that taxpayers have been paying full taxes to the Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) for 50 years and will not receive full BART service (as everyone else has) but will instead receive eBART service, most Antioch residents do not know they have been paying full taxes to the Contra Costa Community College District (CCCCD) FOR 60 years. But, the CCCCD wants Antioch to only receive a 17-acre campus rather than a 100-acre FULL COMMUNITY COLLEGE such as Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, Los Medanos College in Pittsburg, or Contra Costa College in San Pablo.
The Antioch Democratic Club (ADC) is asking “Why should Antioch residents have a tiny campus rather than a full-sized community college?” ADC members want a FULL COMMUNITY COLLEGE for Antioch, Brentwood, and Oakley city residents and those people living in the nearby communities, such as Bethel Island, Bryon, and Discovery Bay.
The Antioch Democratic Club will be asking the CCCCD Board of Trustees to hold its Board meetings at the Antioch City Hall, Brentwood City Hall, and Oakley City Hall to hear that the area’s residents want in a 100-acre college and not just a 17-acre campus. Until those CCCCD Board meetings are held in Far East County, ADC members will go to the CCCCD Board meetings held in Martinez at the CCCCD headquarters.
We also intend to go to Antioch, Brentwood, and Oakley City Council meetings to ask that Councilmembers join us in bringing this opportunity for the families and students to this area.
ADC members will be attending local school board meetings to ask school board members to request that CCCCD Board members attend their school board meetings to explain why that school district’s students will be expected to go far from their homes to a full community college in another city rather than have the same opportunity in their home community.
Anyone can attend meetings held by the Antioch Democratic Club to learn what they can do to get a bring a full community college to their area. Check this ADC website soon for a schedule of meetings. Regular ADC meetings held for members will continue to occur on the first Wednesday of every month.
